2002 World Cup logo Meaning of the World Cup
The Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) has 203 nations as association members. The match game has been held every 4 years between Summer Olympic game years. The teams of each nation consist of the best players that nation has to offer. Since the first World Cup took place with 13 teams in Uruguay in 1930, 16 tournaments have been held, the most recent being in France in 1998.

The 2002 World Cup will be the first World Cup match to be played on the Asian continent. It will also be the first match split between 2 countries, with 32 games played in Korea and 32 games played in Japan. The national teams of each continent (Asia, Africa, Europe, North America, and South America) have been selected through regional preliminary matches between March 2000 and November 2001.
