Meaning of the World Cup The Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) has 203 nations as association members. The match game has been held every 4 years between Summer Olympic game years. The teams of each nation consist of the best players that nation has to offer. Since the first World Cup took place with 13 teams in Uruguay in 1930, 16 tournaments have been held, the most recent being in France in 1998.
